Creating "hanging indentation" in googledocs:

 Visible Ruler

Make sure the Google Docs ruler is visible.

§  Click “View” and make sure “Show Ruler” is checked. If it isn’t, click on it, and the ruler will appear beneath the menu bar.

First Line Indent and Left Indent

On the ruler, there is a light blue rectangle at the left margin, which represents the location of the First Line Indent. Beneath the light blue rectangle is a light blue inverted triangle, which represents the location of the Left Indent.

§  On the ruler, hover the cursor over each shape, and its function will be displayed.

Create the Hanging Indent

§  First: Select the text you want indented. You can select a single paragraph or multiple paragraphs at a time.

§  Next: On the ruler, drag the Left Indent (light blue inverted triangle) to the right as far as you want the text to be indented. As you will notice, the First Line Indent marker (light blue rectangle) will come along for the ride, and all your selected text will move to the right.

Finally: Drag the First Line Indent marker (light blue rectangle) back to the left margin. It will move independently, and your hanging indent will be created.

Brainstorm of Ideas to include in your presentation

o  Who was your “subculture”

o  Is this a subculture? Why? Why not? (use primary and secondary research to address this)

o  Explain the relevance of your subculture, or their characteristics, to the larger culture

o  What were your research questions/assumptions at the beginning?

o  What did you find out? How did your questions/findings change? If they didn’t change, explain.

o  Synthesis – what did you find from primary & secondary research

Examples of primary research: rituals, jargon, language, artifacts, groups w/I subculture

Tues. 3/10 Continue Argument Notes; brainstorm patterns we see in ethnography

Wed. 3/11   Continue Argument notes--classical argument  Interview #3 due (with summary); Encyclopedia due (on paper, in class: add one of each of 13 types of sentence. Label sentences. If you can't make one work, add an original example below all of your encyclopedias. If you believe that your encyclopedia sounds better w/o a certain sentence type, include the draft you like and the draft w/ the sentence experiments for grading);

Thurs. 3/12   Analyze Argument in class: 1.       In LOC, read 13-17 (pay attention to the model essay p 14-17); 2.       Next, read “The Singer Solution to World Poverty” p 319-323.  Answer the questions printed out on my desk.

The definitions for classical argument are on page 13-14 of LOC. I'll write that on the website now. One example of classical argument is in the book w/ the definitions, another is MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail, another is Jonathon Swift's "A Modest Proposal." The reason we're doing refutation again is that it serves a specific purpose in Classical Argument (in Latin it's called a refutatio, but I put the English translation so it would be less confusing to students).

Make sure that you check the book for ideas to add to refutatio as it relates to classical argument.

Analysis: Analysis refers to the ability to break down material into its component parts so that its organizational structure may be understood. This may include the identification of parts, analysis of the relationship between parts, and recognition of the organizational principles involved. Distinguishes between facts and inferences. Learning outcomes here represent a higher intellectual level than comprehension and application because they require an understanding of both the content and the structural form of the material.
