    REQUIREMENTS:

    Write a descriptive narrative essay about how a life event has affected you. Include:

    a.         description (vignettes, anecdotes, imagery, like Alexie’s “fences”),

    b.       A metaphor or metaphorical description

    c.        A connection between the event and how it influenced you. SHOW how. (Alexie showed us how reading helped him become who he was.)

    d.       Make sure you have a heading on your paper

     

    Approximately 350-1000, typed, single-spaced, size 12 font

    Intro/beginning sets up the structure and meaning of the paper for the reader; effective, thought provoking thesis or beginning, attention-getting and focused on the topic 25%

    Body: relevant, carefully chosen description that supports and illustrates the main idea (how the event changed you). Effective use of description, imagery, (metaphor), quotes/dialogue, paragraph development that connect the reader to your topic. 25%

    Conclusion: Powerful ending, interesting reading, refers to event, explores overall importance of topic, leaves reader thinking. 25%

    Mechanics / Organization:   no or minute mechanical errors; clear and purposeful organization; clever, precise, mature diction; sophisticated style and syntax; very effective transitions. 25%
